Successful HVAC sizing trainings held in Medford and Salem

A person in a blue jacket and beige baseball cap services a wall-mounted air conditioning unit above a window with white blinds in a yellow-walled room. They are inspecting or adjusting the underside of the unit, highlighting a typical HVAC maintenance task.

Energy Trust of Oregon’s Residential team delivered a multiday training centered on HVAC sizing and heat pump selection during the first week of November. This training was offered in both Medford and Salem and was attended by two groups of highly engaged trade allies and community partners.

The first day of training began with a four-hour session on using the BetterBuilt NW HVAC Sizing Tool. Participants learned the science behind HVAC sizing calculations. Trainees then got to work as a group to size test homes and engage in conversations about common pitfalls when performing load calculations. After lunch, the second four-hour session focused on heat pump selection. Trainees were asked to consider occupant comfort, operating cost and environmental factors that could impact the selection process.

The second day of the training offered a single four-hour session that covered ductless heat pump selection and installation best practices. Trainees were asked to consider many important steps of the installation process, including system siting, system evacuation and homeowner education.
