Simplify lighting controls: The power of apps in configuration

As lighting technology has matured, newer control systems have become both simpler and more reliable compared to earlier systems. Installers and customers alike can now easily interface with most control systems using their smartphones, as settings can be commissioned via mobile apps. These improvements reduce the chances of customer frustration and installer callbacks. Below is a short description of what can be achieved using a mobile app.

Advanced controls, such as luminaire-level lighting controls (LLLCs), offer a simple way to control space lighting, which greatly improves lighting performance and customer comfort. Properly commissioning LLLCs also unlocks higher incentives from Energy Trust. Manufacturers’ app-based configuration tools can simplify the commissioning process in multiple ways, such as:

  • Ease of configuration in lighting and controls design
  • Simply install the measures, configure them using the app and you are done
  • Establishing vacancy or occupancy operation, daylighting, high-end trim levels and even connection to a building automation system, if desired
    • See Design Lights Consortium’s (DLC’s) DLC Controls Best Practices for a concise resource outlining these key controls strategies.
  • Fixture grouping by space type, such as hallways, conference rooms or individual offices
  • Customization of lighting scenes or events to fit customer needs and desires
  • Creation of different permission levels for the customer, ensuring specific controls settings can only be adjusted by specific staff profiles
  • Allowing a flexible approach in case controls changes are needed in the future

Energy Trust and its trade allies work hard to create value in customer projects. With the combination of advanced lighting controls and simplified app-based commissioning, customers can attain both increased incentives and improved lighting quality, leading to an even more positive experience. Programming lighting controls has never been simpler!
