Optimizing hot water distribution at multifamily properties


When a water heater replacement isn’t feasible, pipe insulation and a recirculation pump can provide substantial energy savings at a fraction of the cost.

Studies suggest that only 35 percent of the energy used in central domestic hot water systems at multifamily properties ends up as usable hot water at the tap. Much of the energy is lost in the distribution pipes and recirculation system.

Pipe insulation and demand controlled recirculation pumps are some of the most cost-effect ways to address an inefficient central domestic hot water system. Energy Trust currently offers incentives for both boiler and domestic hot water pipe insulation as well as recirculation pumps. See below for details.
