Portland City Council approved the long-awaited Residential Infill Project (RIP) in August 2020. This historic zoning reform, dubbed the “best low-density zoning reform in US history” by Sightline, sets new ground rules for housing options in previously single-family neighborhoods across Portland. The goal is to relieve increased housing demand while also laying the framework for more affordable housing. The changes proposed by this project would allow more housing options in Portland’s neighborhoods, including duplexes, triplexes and fourplexes, but only if they follow new limits on size and scale.
This is a great opportunity to position your business to take advantage of these changes as they are rolled out in 2021. Not only will the RIP open the doors for more diverse multifamily housing development in Portland, it will create a specific market for converting single-family homes into duplex, triplex and fourplex properties.
