The Molalla Aquatic Center is a high-use community facility hosting everything from fitness classes to swim meets. Like many public buildings, the center focuses on keeping operating costs low while maintaining comfort and safety for users.
After previously working with Energy Trust of Oregon on a pool cover incentive, the center explored additional energy efficiency opportunities through a site walkthrough with an Energy Trust Allied Technical Assistance Contractor (ATAC). Elevate Building Commissioning identified retrocommissioning as a way to optimize the facility’s HVAC and water heating systems without replacing existing equipment.
Although the system was installed in 2022, controls were not fully optimized. Through targeted adjustments, including reduced supply fan airflow during unoccupied hours, the project is expected to save the center up to $13,000 annually in energy costs.
Beyond savings, the retrocommissioning work reduced humidity on the pool deck and lowered HVAC noise, improving comfort and allowing lifeguards to communicate more easily during busy events.
This project shows how retrocommissioning can uncover hidden savings, even in newer systems, while delivering real operational benefits. For contractors, it’s a powerful way to add value, strengthen customer relationships and leverage Energy Trust incentives.
