Auxiliary heat lockout settings vital to energy-efficient operation of heat pump equipment

Advancements in heat pump technology are delivering far more efficient equipment than ever before to heat and cool homes. Adhering to Energy Trust lockout setting guidelines for heat pump systems maximizes equipment impact on comfort and savings and helps ensure that customers receive the most benefits for their investment.

Heat pumps can reliably provide heating when outdoor temperatures are well below freezing. When in operation, auxiliary backup heating relies on electric resistance heat strips to heat the home, using substantially more energy than the heat pump technology, resulting in higher utility costs when in use. The lockout temperature in the installer settings of the heat pump controller (thermostat) prevents the auxiliary backup heating kit in the air handler from being activated if outdoor temperatures are above the programmed lockout setting threshold.

Energy Trust’s 2025 Specifications Manual addresses lockout settings in section HC 1.1 – Lockout Temperature. It states, “The heat pump control shall have the ability to lock out supplemental/auxiliary electric furnace heat at 35°F. The lockout temperature shall be set at or below 35°F.”

Trade allies can avoid corrective actions and save time for themselves and customers by following the lockout requirements detailed in the 2025 Specifications Manual. The manual also addresses other common requirements to ensure projects maximize comfort, efficiency and savings.
