At Mount Angel Abbey, maintaining an expansive campus of aging buildings is no small task. When the HVAC system in Aquinas Hall became nearly non-operational, the Abbey turned to Energy Trust of Oregon and trade ally Robert Lloyd Sheet Metal to help bring the building’s controls into the modern era. 

The project replaced outdated pneumatic controls, analog gauges, control valves and obsolete control boards with direct digital controls, giving Abbey staff greater visibility into building conditions and more precise control over heating, ventilation and energy use. 

Robert Lloyd Sheet Metal installed the new controls, with more than $22,000 in Energy Trust cash incentives to help reduce the Abbey’s upfront project costs. The improvements are also expected to save Mount Angel Abbey more than $6,500 annually in energy costs. 

The upgraded system is already helping facilities staff identify problems sooner. With improved monitoring, the team recently caught a circulation pump issue before it resulted in equipment failure. 

For Mount Angel Abbey, the Aquinas Hall project is just one step in a larger effort to modernize its campus.
