New efficiency minute videos: Steam traps and smart thermostats

Existing Buildings has two new Efficiency Minute videos available to help trade allies talk with customers about energy-saving upgrades: one focused on steam traps and one focused on smart thermostats.

Steam traps

The steam trap video explains how steam traps help boiler systems run efficiently by separating hot water from steam and returning it to the boiler for reuse. It also highlights how worn or failing steam traps can waste energy, increase natural gas costs and potentially damage equipment.

This video can be a helpful resource for customers who manage school facilities, commercial buildings, lodging properties, laundry operations or other buildings with steam boiler systems.

Smart thermostats

The smart thermostat video explains how smart thermostats can help businesses manage comfort while reducing energy use. The video highlights features such as remote temperature control, temporary schedule overrides, automatic returns to programmed settings and alerts when HVAC equipment may not be working properly.

It also shares a few installation tips, including confirming HVAC system compatibility and placing the thermostat away from vents, radiators, direct sunlight and drafts.
