Air handler closet covers and return air filter grilles ensure long-term operation and performance for new ducted heat pumps

Air handler closet covers and return air filter grilles are important components of heat pump installations that are sometimes overlooked, but can make a difference in equipment longevity, performance and customer satisfaction. A properly sized and installed air handler closet cover and air filter grille can protect equipment, improve system performance, and lend a professional, finished look to a newly installed system.

There are multiple longevity and aesthetic considerations when installing new ducted heat pump equipment, especially for air handlers located in high-traffic, interior areas of a home. These can range from exposed, unsightly, rough openings to protruding line-sets that are more easily damaged by the home’s occupants, pets or even vacuum cleaners.

Since newer air handlers may differ in size from original equipment, rough openings and gaps may be exposed after installation. Line-sets may also protrude beyond the finished interior wall plane, increasing the risk of damage and costly emergency repairs, especially in high-traffic areas. Both problems can be corrected by installing a new air handler closet cover. A fabricated metal cover can be sized to cover gaps and exposed rough openings, lending a more professional, finished look. It can also enclose exposed line-sets, reducing the potential for damage.

Dust infiltration is another important consideration. Dust particles reduce system efficiency and shorten equipment life. However, dust infiltration can be reduced by adding a return air filter grille to an air handler closet. A well-designed filter grille makes it easier to access and replace filters as needed, meaning customers may check and replace filters on a more regular basis, improving system performance and longevity.
