SUMMARY:High Performance Homes Training for Code Officials
DESCRIPTION:High Performance Homes Training for Code Officials\nOCTOBER 20\, 2017 | 8:30 AM – 12:30 PM \nLearn the essentials of building science and examine common building features and techniques being utilized by new home builders that achieve EPSTM (Energy Performance Score) from Energy Trust of Oregon. \nThe course will provide an overview of how builders participating in Energy Trust of Oregon’s New Homes Program are constructing residential structures to achieve EPS\, a third party verification that signals high levels of energy efficiency. You will learn the why\, how and where the most current building techniques and materials are being used to create high performing homes\, and how the EPS standard helps the building industry prepare for increases in energy efficiency standards that are required in future code cycles. \nWhat is EPS? EPS-rated homes are built and tested to exceed code minimum energy standards. With EPS\, home buyers are able to compare how similar-sized homes use energy\, review the features that make energy-efficient homes stand out\, and even see the estimated utility costs before they buy. To determine the score\, a third-party verifier analyzes the home’s features and construction techniques and tests performance factors such as air leakage and duct tightness. Builders that use EPS can also qualify for incentives from Energy Trust of Oregon. EPS has become the industry standard for new homes across Oregon\, as nearly 40% of new home construction statewide has earned above code standards through third party verification and a total of 7 neighborhoods across Central Oregon that require EPS for 100% of homes built within their development. \nWhy does EPS matter to code officials? The new Oregon residential code that takes effect in October 2017 represents an approx. 9% increase in the energy efficiency requirement from the previous code standard. Similar increases in standards are expected to occur in future code cycles\, and above-code EPS-rated homes help the building industry prepare for these changes. In other words\, the high performance home of today can be considered the code home of tomorrow. This training will provide code officials with insights into the features and approaches builders are using today and how they factor into code changes in 2017 and beyond. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nReview building science concepts of thermodynamics\, energy\, and heat transfer\nLearn about air movement and it’s effects on the thermal boundary’s insulating capacity\n\n\nGain an understanding of the features and techniques that go into EPS-rated high performance homes\nUnderstand new home building approaches\, technologies\, and emerging wall systems\n\n\nLook at an overview of solar technology and solar ready infrastructure\nAnticipate future increases in energy code standards\n\nCredits: ICC CEUs (exact number and approval pending)\, 4 CCB Series B\, 4 OCHI\nInstructor: John Spillman – BPI\, LEED Green Rater\, Energy Trust of Oregon (Profile »)

SUMMARY:High Performance Design Training: Natural Ventilation\, Indoor Air Quality and Energy Performance
DESCRIPTION:High Performance Design Training: Natural Ventilation\, Indoor Air Quality and Energy Performance \nNatural ventilation is a fundamental design strategy in healthy\, high-performance buildings. Also known as natural cooling\, it provides benefits for occupants\, such as improved thermal comfort and healthy indoor air quality. Additional energy benefits include reduced mechanical ventilation and access to night flush cooling. Despite the evidence supporting natural ventilation\, design teams often encounter roadblocks due to technical concerns from owners or consultants\, inexperience with non-traditional design analysis tools\, or questions about comfort and air quality. \nThis four-hour workshop will detail the benefits of natural ventilation in commercial and institutional buildings and give participants tools to help overcome any barriers. Instructors will demonstrate how to set goals\, approach the design process\, test design alternatives and verify performance. Participants will also get insight into existing buildings that have implemented these strategies. \nCourse Learning Objectives: \n\nDescribe energy and non-energy (e.g. indoor air quality) benefits associated with implementing natural ventilation strategies\nUnderstand the differences between natural ventilation for fresh air requirements\, natural cooling for daytime comfort\, and night flush cooling of thermal mass\nLearn about tools used to design multiple natural ventilation strategies to meet various design goals in commercial buildings\nUnderstand appropriate design analysis tools to analyze a range of natural ventilation design alternatives\nLearn how to approach measurement and validation of natural ventilation strategies in existing buildings\n\nPresenters: \nJeff Kline – Senior Research Associate\, Energy Studies in Buildings Laboratory\, University of Oregon (UO-ESBL) \nKevin Van Den Wymelenberg – PHD\, Associate Professor\, UO-ESBL

SUMMARY:Building Energy Simulation Forum: The Bullitt Center in Review – Modeled vs. Actual Energy Use
DESCRIPTION:Energy Trust New Buildings presents\, January 2017 Building Energy Simulation Forum: \nThe Bullitt Center opened in Seattle in 2013 as the world’s largest certified commercial Living Building. In order to meet the requirements of the Living Building Challenge\, it was designed to achieve net-zero energy consumption with high-efficiency features such as passive cooling\, natural ventilation\, thermal massing\, and energy-saving HVAC solutions. This presentation will discuss the building’s energy modeling approach\, which used TAS and eQuest during design. Model results from the design will be compared with actual performance data collected over the building’s first three years of operation. Finally\, alternatives to the modeling approach will be discussed in light of changes to the tools available and lessons learned from the Bullitt Center results. \n*BOXED LUNCHES WILL BE PROVIDED*\n*IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO ATTEND IN PERSON\, REGISTER AS A REMOTE ATTENDEE AND THE PHONE AND WEBINAR LOGIN INFORMATION WILL BE EMAILED TO YOU*\n\nAbout the presenter:\nBen Burnett\, PE\nMechanical Engineer\, PAE \nBen is a mechanical engineer with PAE\, a national leader in sustainable design. His focus is on using energy modeling to inform the design of energy-efficient and comfortable buildings. Ben’s resume includes multiple LEED rated or registered projects\, such as the new LEED Platinum\, Passive House and Net Positive Energy Innovation Center for the Rocky Mountain Institute. Ben holds a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Portland State University\, where he studied building science and urban climate as part of the Green Building Research Laboratory. He also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Physics from Oregon State University.
