SUMMARY:Overview of the Commercial Provisions of the 2019 Oregon Commercial Energy Code (OCEC)
DESCRIPTION:Energy Trust and NEEA invite you to join us for a training on the 2019/2020 code changes on November 7\, at the Mercy Corps building in Portland. This half-day event will feature four one-hour modules. We encourage members of the building\, design and code compliance industry to attend one or all the sessions based on interest. \nScheduled Training Sessions \nCommercial Mechanical Provisions of the OCEC (9–10 a.m.): \nLearn about the HVAC requirements for typical Oregon buildings and provisions that significantly impact energy use\, as we compare the current 2014 OEESPC and the 2019 OCEC. \nBuilding Envelope Requirements of the OCEC (10–11 a.m.): \nGet to know the building envelope provisions of the OCEC\, including the updated building envelope R-value/U-factor requirements\, continuous air barrier requirements and other significant changes from the current OEESPC. \nLighting System Requirements of the OCEC (12–1 p.m.): \nFamiliarize yourself with the new lighting power density requirements\, the new lighting control requirements and how to determine what controls apply to what spaces. \nScope and Application of 2019 OCEC to New and Existing Buildings (1–2 p.m.): \nLearn how the commercial provisions of the OCEC apply to new and existing buildings. This is important for code implementation and ultimately achieving energy savings. We’ll also talk about exemptions that apply for new construction\, and how the OCEC applies to additions\, alterations and repairs. \nAbout the presenter: \nEric Makela is an associate director at New Buildings Institute with 30 years of experience in building energy codes and policy. Eric served on the ICC IECC Code Development Committee for four cycles\, and now represents the Northwest Energy Codes Group in developing IECC code change proposals. He previously worked as a senior member of the U.S. DOE Building Energy Codes Program\, where he focused on outreach and education to states and national stakeholders. \nOver his career\, Eric has trained the building\, design and enforcement industry in over 20 states and a variety of venues. He was a recipient of the 2009 Jeffrey A. Johnson Award and the 2008 Canyon County Habitat for Humanity Volunteer of the Year. He has a B.A. in environmental studies from Sonoma State University and an M.A. in education from California State University\, Sacramento.

DESCRIPTION:High Performance Homes Training for Code Officials\nOCTOBER 20\, 2017 | 8:30 AM – 12:30 PM \nLearn the essentials of building science and examine common building features and techniques being utilized by new home builders that achieve EPSTM (Energy Performance Score) from Energy Trust of Oregon. \nThe course will provide an overview of how builders participating in Energy Trust of Oregon’s New Homes Program are constructing residential structures to achieve EPS\, a third party verification that signals high levels of energy efficiency. You will learn the why\, how and where the most current building techniques and materials are being used to create high performing homes\, and how the EPS standard helps the building industry prepare for increases in energy efficiency standards that are required in future code cycles. \nWhat is EPS? EPS-rated homes are built and tested to exceed code minimum energy standards. With EPS\, home buyers are able to compare how similar-sized homes use energy\, review the features that make energy-efficient homes stand out\, and even see the estimated utility costs before they buy. To determine the score\, a third-party verifier analyzes the home’s features and construction techniques and tests performance factors such as air leakage and duct tightness. Builders that use EPS can also qualify for incentives from Energy Trust of Oregon. EPS has become the industry standard for new homes across Oregon\, as nearly 40% of new home construction statewide has earned above code standards through third party verification and a total of 7 neighborhoods across Central Oregon that require EPS for 100% of homes built within their development. \nWhy does EPS matter to code officials? The new Oregon residential code that takes effect in October 2017 represents an approx. 9% increase in the energy efficiency requirement from the previous code standard. Similar increases in standards are expected to occur in future code cycles\, and above-code EPS-rated homes help the building industry prepare for these changes. In other words\, the high performance home of today can be considered the code home of tomorrow. DESCRIPTION:High Performance Design Training: Natural Ventilation\, Indoor Air Quality and Energy Performance \nNatural ventilation is a fundamental design strategy in healthy\, high-performance buildings. Also known as natural cooling\, it provides benefits for occupants\, such as improved thermal comfort and healthy indoor air quality. Additional energy benefits include reduced mechanical ventilation and access to night flush cooling. Despite the evidence supporting natural ventilation\, design teams often encounter roadblocks due to technical concerns from owners or consultants\, inexperience with non-traditional design analysis tools\, or questions about comfort and air quality. \nThis four-hour workshop will detail the benefits of natural ventilation in commercial and institutional buildings and give participants tools to help overcome any barriers. SUMMARY:Energy Trust Women in Solar Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:Energy Trust of Oregon will host a roundtable discussion and networking event focused on identifying opportunities for women to enter and grow in the solar industry. \nSuzanne Leta Liou\, Manager of Global Market Strategy at SunPower and Chair of Solar Energy Industries Association’s Women’s Empowerment Initiative will be leading the conversation. \n“Diversity in the solar industry is important to innovation\, growth and meeting our customers’ needs\,” said Leta Liou\, “Events like this allow the industry to increase opportunities and leadership roles for women\, which is what will drive forward progress.” \nThe roundtable is planned in coordination with Oregon Solar Energy Industries Association (OSEIA) and with volunteer support from local networking group Oregon Women in Energy and Renewables (POWER). \n4:30 – 5:30 Remarks & Roundtable Discussion \n5:30 – 6:30 Networking \nEvent registration is free but donations will be accepted at the event and go to benefit Girls Build\, a nonprofit organization dedicated to putting tools in the hands of girls\, and letting them explore the world of building.

SUMMARY:Existing Homes Specifications Manual Orientation – Part 2
DESCRIPTION:This technical training provides a detailed overview of the Existing Homes Specifications Manual. The manual is revised and published once a year and articulates Energy Trust of Oregon’s requirements for measure installations in detached single family houses. This webinar will explain how projects are reviewed by the program through Quality Assurance visits\, how to avoid common causes of corrective actions and other tips for ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the specifications. \nThis webinar is 2 hours long. Attendance is a prerequisite to enrolling in the trade ally network but all contractors performing work for Energy Trust customers are welcome and encouraged to participate. \nCost is free and course is eligible for 2.0 BPI CEUs.

SUMMARY:Building Energy Simulation Forum: The Bullitt Center in Review – Modeled vs. Actual Energy Use
DESCRIPTION:Energy Trust New Buildings presents\, January 2017 Building Energy Simulation Forum: \nThe Bullitt Center opened in Seattle in 2013 as the world’s largest certified commercial Living Building. In order to meet the requirements of the Living Building Challenge\, it was designed to achieve net-zero energy consumption with high-efficiency features such as passive cooling\, natural ventilation\, thermal massing\, and energy-saving HVAC solutions. This presentation will discuss the building’s energy modeling approach\, which used TAS and eQuest during design. Model results from the design will be compared with actual performance data collected over the building’s first three years of operation. His focus is on using energy modeling to inform the design of energy-efficient and comfortable buildings. Ben’s resume includes multiple LEED rated or registered projects\, such as the new LEED Platinum\, Passive House and Net Positive Energy Innovation Center for the Rocky Mountain Institute. Ben holds a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Portland State University\, where he studied building science and urban climate as part of the Green Building Research Laboratory. He also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Physics from Oregon State University.
