SUMMARY:Building Energy Simulation Forum: The Bullitt Center in Review – Modeled vs. Actual Energy Use
DESCRIPTION:Energy Trust New Buildings presents\, January 2017 Building Energy Simulation Forum: \nThe Bullitt Center opened in Seattle in 2013 as the world’s largest certified commercial Living Building. In order to meet the requirements of the Living Building Challenge\, it was designed to achieve net-zero energy consumption with high-efficiency features such as passive cooling\, natural ventilation\, thermal massing\, and energy-saving HVAC solutions. This presentation will discuss the building’s energy modeling approach\, which used TAS and eQuest during design. Model results from the design will be compared with actual performance data collected over the building’s first three years of operation. Finally\, alternatives to the modeling approach will be discussed in light of changes to the tools available and lessons learned from the Bullitt Center results. \n*BOXED LUNCHES WILL BE PROVIDED*\n*IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO ATTEND IN PERSON\, REGISTER AS A REMOTE ATTENDEE AND THE PHONE AND WEBINAR LOGIN INFORMATION WILL BE EMAILED TO YOU*\n\nAbout the presenter:\nBen Burnett\, PE\nMechanical Engineer\, PAE \nBen is a mechanical engineer with PAE\, a national leader in sustainable design. His focus is on using energy modeling to inform the design of energy-efficient and comfortable buildings. Ben’s resume includes multiple LEED rated or registered projects\, such as the new LEED Platinum\, Passive House and Net Positive Energy Innovation Center for the Rocky Mountain Institute. Ben holds a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Portland State University\, where he studied building science and urban climate as part of the Green Building Research Laboratory. He also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Physics from Oregon State University.

SUMMARY:All About ADUs for Brokers
DESCRIPTION:This half-day course is intended for real estate\, building and design professionals looking to increase their knowledge about Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) development in Bend. \nThe number of ADUs being developed in Bend is on the rise thanks to a 2016 measure by the Bend City Council that makes it easier\, more predictable\, and less expensive for homeowners to build an ADU. More ADUs were developed in 2016 than in any previous year and this Bend Bulletin article shows permit applications are increasing exponentially. Meanwhile\, in the summer of 2016\, the Oregon Department of Revenue codified some important rules around the proper property taxation treatment of ADUs. \nRealtors\, builders and designers on the cutting edge of this emerging development trend will be able to help homeowners/developers understand site selection\, development process\, costs of development\, and the return on investment of ADUs. Earth Advantage Brokers may also take an exam and earn the ADU Specialist designation in order to respond to increasing client demand for properties with ADU potential. Learn more about this class and how to earn the ADU Specialist Designation. \nThis course will be taught by Portland-based ADU expert Kol Peterson\, who has been teaching this class in the Portland region for more than three years. Kol also teaches a day long ADU class for homeowners and runs Portland’s city-wide tour of ADUs. \nQuestions? Contact Heather Kendall at hkendall@earthadvantage.org or (503) 968-7160 x20 \nLearning Objectives: \n\nUnderstand what makes a property ADU-ready/eligible\nLearn what is involved in the process of getting approved to build an ADU\nAnalyze taxation\, valuation and financing options for ADUs\n\nBenefits: \n\nUnderstand the ADU design\, permitting\, and building process (attached\, detached\, and garage conversion)\nGain access to resources to help your clients plan for their ADU (including a budget sample\, contract types\, development rebate programs\, and more)\nGet answers to your ADU-specific questions & network with other brokers about this specialized topic.

SUMMARY:Allies for Efficiency: Westmoreland Union Manor Senior Housing Gets Energy Retrofit
DESCRIPTION:Allies for Efficiency is presented by Energy Trust of Oregon\nWestmoreland Union Manor Senior Housing Gets Energy Retrofit\nConstructed in 1966\, Westmoreland Union Manor in Southeast Portland has provided housing for thousands of senior citizens living on very low fixed incomes. The seven-story building is a concrete and steel lift-slab structure comprised of 301 studio and one-bedroom apartments. Like many other government-built multifamily buildings of similar age around the country\, Westmoreland was due for a major renovation. The primary focus was to lower energy costs\, update building systems and enhance the quality and safety of the interior environment for tenants and staff. \nTo meet those goals\, the renovation improves the building envelope with R-26 walls and triple-pane windows. The heating and cooling system is also getting a boost thanks to high-efficiency ductless heat pumps\, along with heat recovery variable refrigerant flow systems and heat recovery ventilators in common areas. Other upgrades include installation of LED light fixtures\, a switch to condensing gas water heaters and a structural integrity upgrade to meet current earthquake standards. \nThis course will cover how the owner\, developer\, design team and general contractor have worked together to accomplish this major ongoing renovation while minimizing disruptions for tenants. It will also include a summary of the expected energy savings and the project’s incremental and associated financing costs. The presentation will be followed by a building tour looking behind the scenes into the construction process. \nCourse Learning Objectives: \n\nOutline design approaches for meeting the owner’s goals of reducing energy bills and adding comfort for building tenants\nUnderstand the energy modeling process and expected reductions as they relate to the new building envelope and mechanical systems\nDiscuss the financing strategies of the project\, including Low Income Tax Credits\, weatherization funds\, enhancements for reductions in energy use\, HUD SPRAC program and long-term debt\nReview the energy-use enhancements of retrofitting a large multifamily project\, as well as how to analyze existing conditions and apply appropriate upgrades to the envelope and MEP systems\nReview constructability of the building exterior wall details\, including the air barrier strategy\nDiscuss strategies for integrating construction work with minimal disruption to tenants\n\nProfessionals taking this training in Portland are eligible for 3 AIA LU/HSW continuing education credits\, and those attending the online webinar are eligible for 2 AIA LU/HSW continuing education credits. \nPresenters:\nBrian Sweeney\, Housing Development Center\nBill Lanning\, MWA Architects\nAndrew Lasse\, Interface Engineering\nHowie Petker\, WALSH Construction \nTime and Date:\n\nThursday\, February 23\, 2017\nPresentation 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.\nBuilding Tour 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. \n*Important Note: we will no longer be offering remote gatherings for AFE events. Instead\, we are opening up the presentation portion of the event for individual webinar access. We encourage everyone who can attend the live event to do so\, for full access to AIA CEU and to experience the building tour. If you are unable to make it in person to this event please register as a remote attendee and you will receive WebEx information.*
