SUMMARY:Hip Hop Inspired Architecture: Michael Ford
DESCRIPTION:Michael Ford’s talk on Hip Hop Inspired Architecture focuses on three interconnected realms – education\, practice and media to expose the subconscious roles of celebrated modernist architects and urban planners in the creation of the environments which necessitated hip hop’s birth. The multi-media lecture will include a live DJ who extracts samples of rap lyrics as dialogue\, commentary and counterpoints to popular architectural history and theory. The juxtaposition establishes golden era Hip Hop lyrics as a post occupancy evaluation of modern architecture. \nFord will provide examples of his pursuit to create a Hip Hop-inspired architecture through multiple efforts including working with pioneering Hip Hop artist Kurtis Blow to design and program The Universal Hip Hop Museum in The Bronx. He will also discuss his  international initiative\, The Hip Hop Architecture Camp\, a one-week intensive that uses Hip Hop culture as a catalyst to introduce underrepresented youth to architecture and urban planning. Currently\, less than 2% of all architects in The US are African American. Looking to change that\, Ford details how Hip Hop can increase diversity in architecture. Focusing on the intersection of theory and practice\, youth explore Hip Hop as a revolutionary approach to understanding\, conceiving\, and generating architecture for a just city.

SUMMARY:Site Visits: 'Zero Energy Ready' Homes
DESCRIPTION:Join us for two guided CE home tours in the Verde Village neighborhood of Ashland where all homes will earn Earth Advantage ‘Zero Energy Ready’ certification and an Energy Trust of Oregon EPS®.  \nThese homes will provide outstanding energy performance thanks to high performance features and systems that will significantly reduce power demands and allow rooftop solar PV to supply all the energy that will be needed for the homes. \nAttend these tours of one under-construction home and one recently completed home and learn what it takes to achieve the ‘Zero Energy Ready’ standard. You will get a first-hand look at what features go into these homes\, gain helpful resources\, and learn the variety of ways to communicate the health\, comfort\, savings\, and durability benefits of high performance homes to clients. \n\n\n‘Zero Energy Ready’ homes are approx. 30% more efficient than code built homes on average. These homes would achieve a ‘Zero Energy’ standard with the addition of an average-sized solar system. ‘Zero Energy’ is a home that generates as much energy on site as it uses over the course of a year\, making it essentially require zero energy. Learn more here. \nThese homes will feature several highly efficient\, environmentally friendly and healthy home characteristics: \n\nAdvanced building envelope and air tightness\nHigh efficiency mechanical systems (ductless heat pump\, HRV\, tankless hot water heater)\nPre-installed solar PV capacity\nLow/No-VOC (volatile organic compound) materials and products\nRecycled insulation and locally sourced materials\nStormwater control\nEfficient water fixtures\nAdditional durable\, high quality materials and features\n\nQuestions? Contact Heather Kendall at hkendall@earthadvantage.org or (503) 968-7160 x20.

SUMMARY:The Cost Effective Pathway to Zero Energy Homes
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nThe State of California’s building code requires that all new buildings in CA be built to zero energy standards by 2020\, and the Governor of Oregon issued an executive order in 2017 that requires all new homes to achieve a zero energy ready standard by 2023. A rapidly increasing number of architects and builders in Oregon are stepping up to the challenge by creating zero energy homes and have been doing so for many years. The question is\, how can this be achieved cost effectively? \nAdvanced heat pump technology\, lighting\, and solar PV options are challenging the old zero energy paradigm of investments in air sealing\, insulation\, and expensive window upgrades. Learn the different interpretations of what “zero energy” means and how builders are cost-effectively achieving it in the Pacific Northwest. \nDo you live in the Bend or Medford areas? If so\, you can attend an in-person broadcast of the webinar followed by a local market discussion and Q&A with local Zero Energy home certification providers. Then join Energy Trust for an energy efficient home site visit afterward. \n\n9:00 AM -10:00 AM | The Cost Effective Pathway to Zero Energy Homes webinar in-person broadcast\n10:00 AM -10:30 AM | Zero Energy Homes & Your Local Market discussion and Q&A\n11:00 AM-12:30 PM |  Partner Event: Energy Efficient Home Site Visits in Bend and Medford (provided by Energy Trust of Oregon)\n\nPlease indicate in the registration form below if you would like to attend one or more of these events in Bend or Medford. Exact locations of the live broadcasts and site visits will be announced soon and provided via email prior to the webinar. \nLearning Objectives\n\nLearn how to achieve zero energy construction using the most cost-effective approaches available.\nUnderstand how utilizing integrated design process\, passive house-inspired construction techniques\, and energy modeling software can help project teams realize client’s goals within a given budget.\nEducate your clients on what will really help them save energy versus what might drive the cost of construction out of reach.\nDiscover details for designing with solar PV\, community solar options for homes without solar access\, the potential role of home battery energy storage\, and more.\n\nQuestions? Contact Heather Kendall at hkendall@earthadvantage.org or 503-968-7160 x20.
