SUMMARY:August BESF: Annual Energy and Daylight Co-Simulation for Lighting and Shading Controls
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Energy Trust New Building’s August Building Energy Simulation Forum. Shading controls are typically not included in energy modeling and often not considered in daylight modeling. Similarly\, electric lighting is usually represented as a fixed schedule or with the use of simplified daylight harvesting calculations. EnergyPlus approaches this with the split-flux method while Radiance employs a more accurate ray-tracing technique. \nThis presentation will discuss a co-simulation workflow between EnergyPlus and Radiance in a mid-rise commercial office project. This work includes a series of energy and daylighting simulations that produce detailed operation schedules\, informing the whole building energy use and daylighting impacts of multiple shading systems.

SUMMARY:Building Energy Simulation Forum: Using Analytics to Achieve High Performance Buildings
DESCRIPTION:As building energy and system-level monitoring becomes commonplace\, facilities teams are faced with an overwhelming amount of data. This data does not typically lead to insights or corrective actions unless it is stored\, organized\, and analyzed in automated ways. With sophisticated software applied to everyday building operations\, building owners are reaping the cost-savings benefits of energy management and information systems (EMIS) that embed building analytics. Design engineers are beginning to specify EMIS from the start\, which helps maintain as-commissioned performance. \nThe Smart Energy Analytics Campaign is a program led by the U.S. Department of Energy that supports building analytics by providing its participants with technical assistance and opportunities for national recognition.  This presentation will provide an introduction to EMIS\, key attributes for specification\, and an overview of how to get involved in the Campaign. \nBoxed lunches will be provided. \nAbout the presenter: \nHannah Kramer\, P.E. \nConsultant\, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Affiliate \nHannah Kramer is working with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory as the technical lead on a U.S. Department of Energy program to advance the adoption of Energy Management and Information Systems (EMIS) and monitoring-based commissioning across the country. She is responsible for program design\, technical support to participants\, and the development of market characterization studies.  Previously\, Hannah was the Director of Engineering at PECI/CLEAResult where she oversaw technical delivery\, emerging technologies research\, and development of EMIS-enabled utility programs. Over the last 17 years\, she has helped develop numerous resources for the commissioning and energy efficiency industry. Hannah has a mechanical engineering degree from Iowa State University and completed her masters at UC Berkeley in the Energy and Resources Group.  She is a registered professional engineer in the state of Oregon.

SUMMARY:What Makes a Home Use 'Zero Energy'?
DESCRIPTION:Hear the latest on new and cost-effective approaches that make Zero Energy homes more accessible to builders and homebuyers. \n‘Zero Energy’ is defined as: A home that generates as much energy on site as it uses over the course of a year\, making it essentially require zero energy.  \n\n\nThe State of California’s building code requires that all new buildings in CA be built to zero energy standards by 2020\, and the Oregon Governor issued an executive order in 2017 that requires all new homes to achieve a zero energy ready standard by 2023. A rapidly increasing number of architects and builders in Oregon are stepping up to the challenge by creating zero energy homes and have been doing so for many years. The question is\, how can this be achieved cost effectively? \nThe old zero energy paradigm prioritized small\, highly insulated and air sealed homes with expensive windows. But now that formula has changed\, thanks to highly efficient and affordable technologies\, lighting\, and solar PV panels. This new development has fundamentally changed the way builders and homeowners design and construct zero energy homes\, making the potential for widespread adoption within reach. \nJoin us for this class and learn what it takes to achieve zero energy\, the homeowner benefits it provides\, and how builders are cost-effectively achieving it in the Pacific Northwest. Questions? Contact Heather Kendall at hkendall@earthadvantage.org or 503-968-7160 x20.

SUMMARY:Appraising Green Homes
DESCRIPTION:Attend this free 7-hour CE training and learn the differences between code\, green\, and solar PV homes in order to apply well-supported adjustments to appraisal assignments.  \nThis course will provide information on the principles and practices that distinguish new and remodeled “green” homes from traditional code constructed homes\, as well as the latest must-know approaches to solar PV valuation. \nAM: Green Building & Certification\nGain up-to-date info on this rapidly expanding field and an in-depth understanding of the 5 pillars of green building and third-party certification programs in order to equip yourself to competently analyze these properties in appraisal assignments.\nTrainer: John Spillman\, Earth Advantage\nCurriculum developer: Earth Advantage \nPM: Valuation Resources for Solar PV \nAppraisers who possess the knowledge and latest tools to properly value a solar home will have a market edge. This class will provide a comprehensive overview of the tools\, resources and approaches to develop a solar home’s market value\, including an overview of electric rate pricing plans to arrive at an accurate analysis of electric costs.\nTrainer: Gary Kristensen\, A Quality Appraisal LLC\nCurriculum developer: Elevate Energy & US Department of Energy \nBecome an Accredited Green Appraiser\nJoin a nationwide network of appraisers that have completed our Accredited Green Appraiser (AGA) course series in order to differentiate themselves to lenders and AMCs : \n\nModule 1: Appraising Energy Efficient Homes\nModule 2: Appraising Green Homes\n\nAppraisers must complete both courses and pass an accreditation exam in order to earn the AGA designation. If you did not attend Module 1 when it was offered in Medford last October\, then you may still attend Module 2. \n\n\nOur Accredited Green Appraiser (AGA) program provides professionals with the opportunity to enroll in coursework that will both strengthen their expertise and promote their green appraisal qualifications to lenders and AMCs who are seeking “competent” green appraisers. AGAs benefit from professional differentiation by leveraging marketing support from Earth Advantage in the form of AGA logos and an online listing in our registry of designated professionals. Appraisers must earn 4 CEs in green real estate education every 2 yrs to maintain the AGA designation and can do so by completing additional green coursework offered by Earth Advantage or other providers. \n\nGreen Valuation Competency\nDid you know the secondary mortgage market (Fannie\, Freddie\, and FHA) and Appraisal Foundation guidelines require “competency” in this topic area prior to accepting an assignment on an energy efficient home? Take this course and become one of the appraisers in your area that lenders and AMCs can turn to who meet this standard. \nThe Accredited Green Appraiser (AGA) program has been recommended as qualifying green home valuation education by the Appraisal Foundation and the Oregon Appraiser Certification & Licensure Board (ACLB). AGA has been offered live across California\, Maryland\, Massachusetts\, Virginia\, Washington and Alabama\, and an online course is currently under development. \nQuestions? Contact us at hkendall@earthadvantage.org or call 503.968.7160 x20.

SUMMARY:Hip Hop Inspired Architecture: Michael Ford
DESCRIPTION:Michael Ford’s talk on Hip Hop Inspired Architecture focuses on three interconnected realms – education\, practice and media to expose the subconscious roles of celebrated modernist architects and urban planners in the creation of the environments which necessitated hip hop’s birth. The multi-media lecture will include a live DJ who extracts samples of rap lyrics as dialogue\, commentary and counterpoints to popular architectural history and theory. The juxtaposition establishes golden era Hip Hop lyrics as a post occupancy evaluation of modern architecture. \nFord will provide examples of his pursuit to create a Hip Hop-inspired architecture through multiple efforts including working with pioneering Hip Hop artist Kurtis Blow to design and program The Universal Hip Hop Museum in The Bronx. He will also discuss his  international initiative\, The Hip Hop Architecture Camp\, a one-week intensive that uses Hip Hop culture as a catalyst to introduce underrepresented youth to architecture and urban planning. Currently\, less than 2% of all architects in The US are African American. Looking to change that\, Ford details how Hip Hop can increase diversity in architecture. Focusing on the intersection of theory and practice\, youth explore Hip Hop as a revolutionary approach to understanding\, conceiving\, and generating architecture for a just city.
