SUMMARY:Allies for Efficiency: Westmoreland Union Manor Senior Housing Gets Energy Retrofit
DESCRIPTION:Allies for Efficiency is presented by Energy Trust of Oregon\nWestmoreland Union Manor Senior Housing Gets Energy Retrofit\nConstructed in 1966\, Westmoreland Union Manor in Southeast Portland has provided housing for thousands of senior citizens living on very low fixed incomes. The seven-story building is a concrete and steel lift-slab structure comprised of 301 studio and one-bedroom apartments. Like many other government-built multifamily buildings of similar age around the country\, Westmoreland was due for a major renovation. The primary focus was to lower energy costs\, update building systems and enhance the quality and safety of the interior environment for tenants and staff. \nTo meet those goals\, the renovation improves the building envelope with R-26 walls and triple-pane windows. The heating and cooling system is also getting a boost thanks to high-efficiency ductless heat pumps\, along with heat recovery variable refrigerant flow systems and heat recovery ventilators in common areas. Other upgrades include installation of LED light fixtures\, a switch to condensing gas water heaters and a structural integrity upgrade to meet current earthquake standards. \nThis course will cover how the owner\, developer\, design team and general contractor have worked together to accomplish this major ongoing renovation while minimizing disruptions for tenants. It will also include a summary of the expected energy savings and the project’s incremental and associated financing costs. The presentation will be followed by a building tour looking behind the scenes into the construction process. \nCourse Learning Objectives: \n\nOutline design approaches for meeting the owner’s goals of reducing energy bills and adding comfort for building tenants\nUnderstand the energy modeling process and expected reductions as they relate to the new building envelope and mechanical systems\nDiscuss the financing strategies of the project\, including Low Income Tax Credits\, weatherization funds\, enhancements for reductions in energy use\, HUD SPRAC program and long-term debt\nReview the energy-use enhancements of retrofitting a large multifamily project\, as well as how to analyze existing conditions and apply appropriate upgrades to the envelope and MEP systems\nReview constructability of the building exterior wall details\, including the air barrier strategy\nDiscuss strategies for integrating construction work with minimal disruption to tenants\n\nProfessionals taking this training in Portland are eligible for 3 AIA LU/HSW continuing education credits\, and those attending the online webinar are eligible for 2 AIA LU/HSW continuing education credits. \nPresenters:\nBrian Sweeney\, Housing Development Center\nBill Lanning\, MWA Architects\nAndrew Lasse\, Interface Engineering\nHowie Petker\, WALSH Construction \nTime and Date:\n\nThursday\, February 23\, 2017\nPresentation 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.\nBuilding Tour 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. \n*Important Note: we will no longer be offering remote gatherings for AFE events. Instead\, we are opening up the presentation portion of the event for individual webinar access. SUMMARY:Allies for Efficiency: Sustainable and Resilient School Design – Implementing the Beaverton School District Resilience Plan
DESCRIPTION:Allies for Efficiency: Sustainable and Resilient School Design – Implementing the Beaverton School District Resilience Plan \nIn February 2013\, the Oregon Seismic Safety Policy Advisory Commission published The Oregon Resilience Plan\, which outlines the risks and challenges facing Oregonians from the inevitable Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake. The plan provides sobering predictions about the impacts of a magnitude 9+ earthquake and is a call to action for all Oregonians. Administrators from the Beaverton School District read this plan and understood their responsibility to provide safe\, resilient schools for their community. The Beaverton School District\, which is currently executing a $680 million bond program approved by voters in May 2014\, sponsored a community-wide effort to translate the concepts of the Oregon Resilience Plan into forward-thinking design criteria\, which exceed code requirements for new school buildings. The District’s seven new schools will achieve seismic Risk Category IV for structural components and contain features that will allow the schools to serve as temporary community shelters after a disaster. \nThis presentation will provide an overview of the District’s bond program and discuss motivations for the resilience work\, including criteria selected and cost impacts. It will also use the newly completed middle school at Timberland as a design case study. Designed on a very tight timeline with an inflexible budget\, Timberland middle school is an innovative\, sustainable and resilient building that is 62 percent more efficient than a standard school building of its size\, and fully capable of functioning as a community emergency shelter post-disaster. \nCourse Learning Objectives: \n\nUnderstand the role schools can play in community emergency response and economic recovery after a major disaster\nLearn how to engage community stakeholders to effectively incorporate resilience strategies into school designs\nUnderstand how to design holistically\, and incorporate efficient HVAC\, lighting and envelope\, resulting in a school building significantly more efficient than the standard building type baseline\nIdentify strategies for emergency power\, how to right-size an emergency generator for a school emergency shelter\nLearn innovative strategies for designing and financing resilient solar power systems\n\nPresenters: \nRichard L. Steinbrugge\, Executive Administrator for Facilities\, Beaverton School District\nJay Raskin\, Architect\, and Founder of Salus Resilience\nKent Yu\, Principal\, SEFT Consulting Group\nKurtis Zenner\, Associate\, Mahlum Architects\nDavid Chesley\, Principal\, Interface Engineering \n Breakfast and coffee provided. \n*Webinar option available *

SUMMARY:August BESF: Annual Energy and Daylight Co-Simulation for Lighting and Shading Controls
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Energy Trust New Building’s August Building Energy Simulation Forum. Shading controls are typically not included in energy modeling and often not considered in daylight modeling. Similarly\, electric lighting is usually represented as a fixed schedule or with the use of simplified daylight harvesting calculations. EnergyPlus approaches this with the split-flux method while Radiance employs a more accurate ray-tracing technique. \nThis presentation will discuss a co-simulation workflow between EnergyPlus and Radiance in a mid-rise commercial office project. This work includes a series of energy and daylighting simulations that produce detailed operation schedules\, informing the whole building energy use and daylighting impacts of multiple shading systems.

SUMMARY:Building Energy Simulation Forum: Using Analytics to Achieve High Performance Buildings
DESCRIPTION:As building energy and system-level monitoring becomes commonplace\, facilities teams are faced with an overwhelming amount of data. This data does not typically lead to insights or corrective actions unless it is stored\, organized\, and analyzed in automated ways. With sophisticated software applied to everyday building operations\, building owners are reaping the cost-savings benefits of energy management and information systems (EMIS) that embed building analytics. Design engineers are beginning to specify EMIS from the start\, which helps maintain as-commissioned performance. \nThe Smart Energy Analytics Campaign is a program led by the U.S. Department of Energy that supports building analytics by providing its participants with technical assistance and opportunities for national recognition.  This presentation will provide an introduction to EMIS\, key attributes for specification\, and an overview of how to get involved in the Campaign. \nBoxed lunches will be provided. \nAbout the presenter: \nHannah Kramer\, P.E. \nConsultant\, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Affiliate \nHannah Kramer is working with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory as the technical lead on a U.S. Department of Energy program to advance the adoption of Energy Management and Information Systems (EMIS) and monitoring-based commissioning across the country. She is responsible for program design\, technical support to participants\, and the development of market characterization studies.  Previously\, Hannah was the Director of Engineering at PECI/CLEAResult where she oversaw technical delivery\, emerging technologies research\, and development of EMIS-enabled utility programs. Over the last 17 years\, she has helped develop numerous resources for the commissioning and energy efficiency industry. Hannah has a mechanical engineering degree from Iowa State University and completed her masters at UC Berkeley in the Energy and Resources Group.  She is a registered professional engineer in the state of Oregon.

SUMMARY:What Makes a Home Use 'Zero Energy'?
DESCRIPTION:Hear the latest on new and cost-effective approaches that make Zero Energy homes more accessible to builders and homebuyers. \n‘Zero Energy’ is defined as: A home that generates as much energy on site as it uses over the course of a year\, making it essentially require zero energy.  \n\n\nThe State of California’s building code requires that all new buildings in CA be built to zero energy standards by 2020\, and the Oregon Governor issued an executive order in 2017 that requires all new homes to achieve a zero energy ready standard by 2023. A rapidly increasing number of architects and builders in Oregon are stepping up to the challenge by creating zero energy homes and have been doing so for many years. The question is\, how can this be achieved cost effectively? \nThe old zero energy paradigm prioritized small\, highly insulated and air sealed homes with expensive windows. But now that formula has changed\, thanks to highly efficient and affordable technologies\, lighting\, and solar PV panels. This new development has fundamentally changed the way builders and homeowners design and construct zero energy homes\, making the potential for widespread adoption within reach. \nJoin us for this class and learn what it takes to achieve zero energy\, the homeowner benefits it provides\, and how builders are cost-effectively achieving it in the Pacific Northwest. Questions? Contact Heather Kendall at hkendall@earthadvantage.org or 503-968-7160 x20.
